James Franco Covered People in Sticky Goo to Celebrate Renaissance Sculpture

Actor and filmmaker James Franco has created a gooey four-minute video response to Italian Renaissance sculpture as part of Sotheby’s upcoming exhibition, “Glazed: The Legacy of the Della Robbia.”

Reacting to the vibrant sculptures seen in Sotheby’s selling exhibition, Franco’s film is said to be a contemporary reinterpretation of the pioneering Della Robbia technique, highlighting the power and influence of the Renaissance masters that is still felt today.

It shows models depicting poses from the famous works while being covered in a clear, sticky substance that dribbles all over them in slow motion from above their heads.

“I was immediately struck by the vibrancy and shine of the glaze of the Della Robbia sculptures in this show, especially the human forms frozen in time as icons,” Franco said in a press release. “To mimic and modernize these sculptures, I wanted to create living icons emphasizing the glazing process.”

“Glazed: The Legacy of the Della Robbia” is on view at Sotheby’s in New York City on November 18. Check out the video above.
