Facebook has announced it’s making changes to its algorithm in order to prioritize content from friends and families over publishers and brands.
“We built Facebook to help people stay connected and bring us closer together with the people that matter to us,” Zuckerberg wrote in a post published yesterday. “But recently we’ve gotten feedback from our community that public content — posts from businesses, brands, and media — is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other.”
In a blog post discussing the changes, VP of News Feed Adam Mosseri wrote that Facebook will attempt to prioritize “posts that inspire back-and-forth discussion in the comments and posts that you might want to share and react to.” He continued, “Because space in News Feed is limited, showing more posts from friends and family and updates that spark conversation means we’ll show less public content, including videos and other posts from publishers or businesses.”
It’s worth noting that this change differs from the previous test where Facebook moved its Page content to the explore tab. The update will still see Page posts populate the News Feed, albeit fewer of them.
