On Tuesday, just before the highly-anticipated launch event for the iPhone 8, Samsung announced that it plans to release a foldable smartphone in 2018. The new technology will fall under Samsung’s Galaxy Note umbrella.
“As the head of the business, I can say our current goal is next year,” Koh Dong-jin, president of mobile business at Samsung Electronic, told Associated Press reporters. “When we can overcome some problems, for sure, we will launch the product.”
While he did not further elaborate on what these problems are, analysts say mass-producing a phone with a thin body and top-tech features will take time. Samsung first demonstrated it was working on a phone with a flexible display back in 2013, as you can see in the video below. The company showed a phone prototype called Youm that year.
